Montessori
It begins with belief in the inherent value of each person
and capitalizes on their intrinsic motivation.
“Scientific observation then has established that education
is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by
experiences upon the environment.”

Montessori Core Values
While manifested differently in different environments, Montessori education has at its core a unifying and universal set of values. These characteristics offer those providing this educational model, and those supporting that effort, a clear landscape of Montessori. Ideally, these core values lead all toward a fuller appreciation of each individual’s responsibility and potential. 1 Every child is unique. They have individual needs, goals, attitudes, behaviors and expectations in terms of learning 2 While developing humans share similarities, each will construct and proceed on a unique and personal pathway in support of their own education: their physical, emotional and spiritual experiences with their environment are paramount, their innovations valid & vital 3 The opportunity and responsibility to manage one’s own learning process is theirs alone; the role of the teacher is to provide access to a wide variety of educational materials that “meet the child” where he or she is to engage their intrinsic motivation 4 Learning environments are thoughtful and well-prepared in order to provide both meaningful work and a peaceful setting in which to approach and accomplish that work |
Principles of Montessori
Activities are not driven by curriculum alone, rather they are designed to impart lessons that enable individuals to participate meaningfully and skillfully in a variety of ever-changing settings. Strengths-based Environments and activities leverage capacities, talents, skills and current resources Self-directed What the individual envisions and can accomplish is of most value; not what the teacher dictates. Respect compassion and integrity are essential for education and peace; accordingly all are valued for their individual natures and contributions Autonomy & Collaboration Working alone and in concert with others reinforces the connected nature of all beings; a prepared environment offers ample opportunities for both types of work Intellectual Curiosity Prepared environments are dynamic in both design and variety to encourage personal growth & accomplishment Community All members actively support one another while pursuing their own development and interests Inter-connectedness Through each other the world is reinforced Service What we learn, we share. This creates a sustainable continuum of care model, for both organizations, communities-at-large, and individuals |
